SUMMARY:Engaging Millennial Minds: Young Caregivers - Taking Care of Your Parent or Grandparent
DESCRIPTION:Presents \nEngaging Millenial Minds \nYoung Caregivers – Taking Care of Your Parent or Grandparent \n\n\nOne in four young Canadians provide care to a family member or friend but taking on the role as a caregiver can interfere with life pursuits. Education and career development may be postponed\, and delays may be experienced in leaving the family home\, getting married\, and having children. Rates of caregiving are particularly high among young women. \nProviding care is not always restricted to helping one family member\, friend\, or neighbour. About one in four young caregivers provide care to two people\, while 19% provided care to three or more family members or friends. Ailing grandparents are the most frequent recipients of young caregivers’ help\, followed by parents\, and around one third help with age-related needs. Caregivers under 30 most often help with chores like meal preparation and cleaning\, transportation to and from appointments or shopping\, and house maintenance or outdoor work. But sometimes care includes paying the bills and personal grooming. \nThe additional potential costs of caring for a loved one include accidental injuries\, sleep problems\, depression and social isolation. Hear from a young caregiver on how she’s learned to cope\, and gain a better appreciation for how proper wealth planning can help ensure families are financially prepared for the future. \nEnjoy light refreshments\, and a chance to win fabulous door prizes. \nGUEST SPEAKERS: \n \nKathryn Fudurich\nCaregiver & Co-Founder Memory Ball \n \nKelly Rivard\nVice President and Will & Estate Consultant\,\nRBC Wealth Management Services \nEMCEE: \n \nMatteo Tino\nInvestment Counsellor\, RBC Wealth Management\,\nPH&N Investment Counsel \nTICKETS \nTickets: $35 | MEMBERS* $25 \nBUY TICKETS\n* Membership has its privileges! SUMMARY:Engaging Millennial Minds: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) – Know It When It Happens
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTS \nENGAGING MILLENNIAL MINDS\n— \nTraumatic Brain Injury (TBI)KNOW IT WHEN IT HAPPENS\n\nResearch is increasingly showing that a blow to the head triggers biological processes in the brain that burn away in the background for years. TBI is an alteration in brain function\, or other evidence of brain pathology caused by an external force. It is caused by a bump\, blow\, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move back and forth rapidly. \nA concussion\, which is the most common form of TBI\, may or may not involve a loss of consciousness. You do not have to black out\, or be knocked out\, to experience a concussion. Concussion may result in an altered mental status that affects cognitive (e.g. thinking\, memory\, learning) and physical performance. Symptoms after concussion usually resolve within weeks. But head injuries may lead to the development of dementia many years later. \nDespite so much attention on male athletes\, women account for approximately a third of traumatic brain injuries. Women suffer more concussions than men in the sports that both play\, with an injury rate 50 percent higher. Yet female concussion is vastly understudied. \nFind out more about TBI and hear first-hand from trampoline Olympic gold medalist Rosie MacLennan about her experience with concussion and what she fears most. \nEnjoy light refreshments\, and a chance to win fabulous door prizes. \n \nEMCEELaura BestPhD Medical Science Candidate at University of Toronto\,Centre for Addiction and Mental Health \nSPECIAL GUEST SPEAKERS \n\n\n \nDr. Carmela TartagliaNeurologist\, Memory Clinic\, Krembil Neuroscience Centre\,Associate Professor\, University of Toronto \n\n\n \nRosie MacLennanOlympic Gold Medalist \n\n\n \nJulia HamerNeuroscience Researcher\, St. Michael’s Hospital \n\n\n\nTICKETS \nGeneral Admission $35Millennial Minds Member $25Membership has its privileges! SUMMARY:Engaging Millennial Minds: Heart Health & Brain Health – More Connected Than You Think
DESCRIPTION:PRESENTS \nENGAGING MILLENNIAL MINDS\n— \nHeart Health & Brain Health\nMORE CONNECTED THAN YOU THINK\n\nWhat helps your heart can help your brain too. Following a heart-healthy lifestyle can lower your chances of having a stroke\, and it can also make a big difference in your mental abilities as you age. New studies have shown that the risk factors that can lead to heart disease and stroke\, such as physical inactivity and obesity\, also contribute to dementia\, Alzheimer’s disease\, memory loss and cognitive dysfunction. \nThose with heart-healthy habits in their 20s tend to have larger\, healthier brains in their 40s. The brain is highly dependent on a healthy heart and circulatory system to work right\, so it makes sense that heart-healthy living would result in a healthier brain. \nOne strong predictor of brain health is high blood pressure\, and it is the most significant risk factor for stroke. But a stroke can happen when you’re young. Hear first-hand from a young strong survivor about her personal experience and better understand your own risks. \nEnjoy light refreshments\, and a chance to win fabulous door prizes. \nGUEST SPEAKERS \n \nDr. Walter Montanera\nInterventional Neuroradiologist\,\nProject Investigator\, Kennan Research Centre for Biomedical Science\, St. Michael’s Hospital \n \nDr. Elizabeth Chertkow\nFamily Physician\, Glengrove Medical Centre \n \nErin Carroll\nMom\, Teacher\, and Stroke Survivor \n \nDina Pestonji\nMotivational Speaker\, Coach\, and Stroke Survivor \nEMCEE \n \nJulia Hamer\nMSc Candidate\, MSc Candidate\, Institute of Medical Science\, University of Toronto\nLi Ka Shing Knowledge Institute\, St. Michael’s Hospital \nTICKETS \nGeneral Admission $35\nMillennial Minds Member $25\nMembership has its privileges!
